Here is my ampersand design. Although I wouldn't say the ampersand is completely integrated into the whole design I really like the contrast and how much it stands out from everything else. I also quite like how I decided to draw the ampersand divided in blocks. Finally I wish honestly it could have been a bit more creative, I do like the simplicity of my design but I think I'm ready to change it up on the next assignment and try something more whimsical. So this is what I chose to do for our free assignment and it is hand-lettering. This is something we started at a class one day (well a three person class) and I never got around to finishing. I decided to complete it and because I hand-lettering one of the aspects I enjoy most about graphic design, I figured this would be appropriate. It simply stated 'knowledge is power' and has an image of a lightbulb. The latter part of the word 'knowledge' is made to look like the filament in the lightbulb and is lighting up the lightbulb to associate knowledge with literal power and electricity. I chose these fonts with some help from the internet but I find I'm gravitating towards fonts like the cursive one more often now that I've had a chance to look at many fonts. This was also the first time I've incorporated colour into one of my designs but still kept it fairly simplistic and this way the yellow really pops.
For this assignment I went looking all over the internet for a quote and after coming up with nearly nothing, I finally stumbled across this one. "Double double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble" is a quote from Macbeth I believe, where a witch says it. Considering witches are associated with Halloween and Halloween happens to fall in the season of autumn, I figured I would use this quote. Thankfully it was 10 words long and most people do know this quote well, and associate it with Halloween. My image for this assignment was the cauldron and the bubbles coming from it. This is obviously because the last bit of the quote is 'cauldron bubble'. My repetiton can be found in the colour scheme, the flames that are repeated along the middle, the bubbles, and the cursive font repeated. Finally I took my photo of a witch holding my design to connect further to the halloween/witch theme. For this hand lettering project I first went on the internet to look for inspiration for the font of the letters as well as the saying. I found a picture that included some fonts I liked but also the saying "dream big". I figured this saying would be a nice two words for the assignment and thought it would allow me to incorporate a few extra visual elements such as the sort of thought bubble and "Zzzz...". I'm actually pretty happy with how this turned out considering it was my first time attempting anything like this. It was actually really cool to be able to try it out because graphic designs like this are really popular right now on Instagram and clothing etc. It definitely didn't turn out perfect specifically in the spacing of the letters on the bottom and the lines everywhere aren't perfectly spaced and straight. These were definitely challenges and I found towards the end I rushed myself a bit but overall I'm pretty proud of myself.
Today it was really cool to be able to work with different drawing and writing utensils to create different effects on our hand lettering. This was a big change for me but interesting to try because I usually work with just a pencil never charcoal or fancy writing pens. However I really enjoyed getting to test out new tools but also to see how the music that was being played would effect my artwork. For example "Boom Boom Pow" was played when we used thick charcoal on craft paper and I think since the song was more upbeat my words were made faster and in thicker, bolder strokes.
So here is my alphabet made from train tracks and toy trains. I worked on creating each letter with my group and I'd say we took a pretty basic approach to the project. Since the train tracks were straight and curvy it made it pretty easy to form each letter. My biggest difficulty was visualizing how the edit would work and and how to put all the photos together.
So I wasn't exactly sure how to go about this assignment mainly because the instructions were very vague but after reading the attached article and looking at some of the pictures throughout, I finally decided how to start. Basically I saw one photo in particular showing many different ways of writing "Butterfield Photography", and so based on this I made my words. A few random words came to mind and so I sketched those out in different fonts shapes, and themes and practiced how some of the letters might work on the right hand side. For the word trip for example I did big shaded letters and a little paper airplane zooming around. I found this assignment a little difficult again because I didn't really know exactly what to do but I ended up just going my own route. It was also a little challenging because I don't consider myself gifted in the area of drawing and sketching but I'm reasonably happy with how it turned out.
