When I first hear the question of who I am, I immediately think I'm a dancer. However, recent events have made me realize I'm not only that and never was just that. Based on my family's origins, I am Scottish, German, English, Irish and obviously Canadian. Some things that are important to me are family and friends but I also love music, fashion, dance, exercise, and travelling amongst other things. As tough as school can be, since switching to Collingwood I've realized I love school as well. Some traits I think best describe me are funny, shy, nice, and friendly. I also love to have a good time with friends and trying new things.
For this project I really had no clue where to start so I was looking through my photos and started gravitating to some of my brighter coloured modelling shots. I downloaded around 10 apps to try out and ended up going with Piclay. For the first one I picked a Dr. Seuss quote that I thought was pretty cute and stuck with blues and white with more square fonts and then contrasting cursive ones. On the second picture the approach was a little more simple. I mirrored the picture, chose a nice, solid font that stands out, and put it in a light orange colour. Finally I added some shadow to the text. Overall I found working only on my phone was a little restricting and hard to find inspiration. For a little over a week now we've been learning how to work with the new, interesting media that is calligraphy. It was quite a challenge in the beginning trying to get the hang of things, but once you're a bit more comfortable with it, it's really cool. At the start it was hard to get the right technique down, making sure to not spill ink everywhere, and getting the right amount of pressure on the nib. However, even with the tough start, the end result was quite rewarding. It's amazing to see the way the calligraphy pen goes across the paper so smoothly and it's really cool that you can vary the linen thickness whereas with a pen you would have to go back over the line a few times. I chose the brick wall for my background to make it look like graffiti. Overall it was a really fun experience to learn to do calligraphy.
For this project I decided to draw on one of my old dance trophies with a quote about the difference between winning and losing. The quote is the 'the difference between losing and winning is always a mental one'. This really applies to my dancing im that I struggle with the mental side of competing. However, recently I had a competition where I wasn't as concentrated on the other competitors etc., and I did way better in my results. This specific project was quite difficult considering I had to draw over many uneven surfaces. Because of this it didn't turn out quite how I hoped but overall it was good experience. Here was my design for the spirit of the season assignment. I decided to draw a christmas tree with some ornaments because, like most families, mine always has a christmas tree. We decorate it altogether and play our christmas music which includes the song that I used the title of for my words. This and many other songs are what we always listen to during christmas time but especially when we're decorating our tree. I like how fairly clean and simplistic this is and overall just represents a happy time of the year for me. 1- for my photographic subject it will be a picture I take of a model and I am choosing this because I really want to try working with photography for this assignment and try out the cameras and lighting. 2- I will most likely use a typeset font unless I can't find what I am looking for. I want a big, artistic font for the title and something smaller and simpler for the other text on the cover. 3- The content my magazine will explore is to get the 'perfect yet natural' look. Through my cover I want to bring to people's attention just how fake the things they show us in magazine's really are. They are photoshopped and unrealistic and I think this assignment and the angle I am choosing will allow me to explore photoshop and also bring an important matter to people's attention. 4- I will be creating my own magazine for this assignment because I want to make the title satirical and the best way to do this is to create my own title and magazine. 5- Since this magazine will never have been seen before because it doesn't exist, it allows me to change things up since I am not confined by the boundaries other popular magazines have set for themselves. I really want thid to look like a normal magazine at a glance, but close up, your view will change on how you see the magazine. Some tag line ideas: - Title: Real magazine - How to get the 'Natural' look this holiday season! - The perfect shoes! How to impress your friends while breaking the bank! - Thigh gaps: All the rage and as simple as photoshopping out a square between your legs! - Vacation glow: What's something minor like skin cancer when you can look like a bronze goddess! - The perfect blowout starting at only 500$! - The simple way to get that 'Wow' chest! Implants are for you! Content possibilities: I want to hook viewers with first a gorgeous girl on the cover, mean want to look at her, women want to learn how to look like her. Upon further inspection of the cover they start to read the tag lines and title and are taken aback. They thought this was a normal magazine cover and are surprised when it brings all the things people do to make you think that covergirl is perfect. |
